Gay Marriage Leaves Door Open for Satan to Take Your Children.

Okay on Monday I posted a blog and made a silly little comment saying that “… if two gays or two lesbians get married we open the gates of hell and Satan comes and takes your children….”

I was surprised at how many people sent me e-mails and took offense to what I had to say. These people apparently had "spoken" with God and he had assured them that he was no friend of the gays. He also told them that he loved America more than any other country and was a huge fan of The 700 Club.

The small controversy all started when I posted a blog on Monday about Fight the Good Fight [CCL of Maine/MFPC] where they mention they need to fight against gay equality for the children of Maine.

Well if they get to rattle off what they believe, then I can do the same thing. So let me start off by telling you a series of things that I believe to be true.

* I am a person who believes that I was born gay. I don't think I hade any control over whom I was attracted to. That's why it's called an attraction and not a choice.

* I honestly believe that America is a great nation of even greater people. I also believe that anyone who says that this is a "Christian nation" doesn't realize that most of our founding fathers could see that there was a need to put into their brand new constitution a SEPARATION OF CHURCH AND STATE so that the ideals of a group of people could never be forced onto the whole. (On a related note: I do find it kind of funny when people point out to me that it says "one nation under god" in our pledge of allegiance, not realizing that this was added in the1950’s during the communism scare of the McCarthy era.)

* I believe the fact that an atheist is allowed to enter into the holy land of marriage while a gay Christian is not, shows that this law is subjective.

* I believe that their isn't one person who is against gay marriage that can give me a reason why it shouldn't be legal without bringing God or their religion into it. Yet I am amazed at the audacity of a small, misdirected group of the ultra-conservative Christian right wing to spend millions of dollars on advertisements to stop two men or women who love each other from being able to be married. Yet if you present any opposition to them, they accuse you of attacking their religion. Isn't it funny that the people who are the quickest to take someone's basic rights are always the loudest to scream when someone attacks their right to do so?

Now I will leave you with a question. Please explain to me how my conversation about laws have anything to do with religion at all?

  1. The christian right likes to go on and on ad nauseum about how god hates gays and loves the church "the 700 club" etc. etc. but when you look at it from a historic standpoint Jesus was what today would be considered a radical. Who did he hang out with? A hooker, a tax collector, fishermen (a surly lot in their day) and was a drifter without a "real" job. And when you look at it who did this radical rebel against? The scribes and pharasees, they were the religious right of the day, so I would have to say a resounding No! Jesus would not side with the "700 club" Jesus came to bring hope to the downtroden, the oppressed, the very people who the "700 club" oppress in the name of their god, who is probably rolling sumersaults in his grave about how his teachings are taken so far out of context, how wars are waged in his name, etc etc ad nauseum, if Jesus were alive today I think he would have been at the National Equality March with us, and hung out talking with us after and assure us and tell us that he doesnt hate the "700 club" for hating us, and that neither should we, that they are just misguided and it is people like you and I MJ that are blessed with the job of educating people to help bring an end to this senseless cycle of mindless hate, based on who we may or may not love... I have heard the christian right frame this as a culture war, if that is the case then we are an army of lovers and we stand in opposition to a culture of hate and fear mongering....so we must fight the good fight, we cannot give up, and we cannot fail, it is not an option.
    peace...dove out

  2. Don't forget Mike, Christians are trying to save your soul. The problem with people like that is they don't understand that this country was built of freedoms. Many of their fore fathers left England and other countries because of oppression. We are raised with this idea that we are always right. We can do anything and it's okay. Well it's not okay. It's not okay to push your belief system on someone else and it is not okay to make seperate but equal laws, because most of us learned seperate is not equal.
    Don't be brought down by people who can't stand to look at themselves in the mirror. I found with my time in the church that when you call someone out for something they are doing wrong they get angry and they get hurtful. I've seen racism, bigotry, adultry, rape and so many other things hidden in the church and when they get called out they sling mud at you, because they don't want to change. The church is great for generating fear and lack of thought. "Why can't we do this? Because God says so." As a child the biggest fear is going to hell. And it morphs into adulthood into something almost sinister. They use the Bible as a weapon to create fear and hatred when really the New Testament is all about love. "God so loved the world that he gave his only begotten son, so that whosoever believes in him shall not parish." I don't fear satan anymore. I fear the Christians. They will start widdling down the people who aren't like them and we will see them disappear in the night.There is a poem about that reminds me everyday to keep fighting..
    First they came for the communists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a communist;
    Then they came for the socialists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a socialist;
    Then they came for the trade unionists, and I did not speak out—because I was not a trade unionist;
    Then they came for the Jews, and I did not speak out—because I was not a Jew;
    Then they came for me—and there was no one left to speak out for me.
    I never want to hear about a child like Larry King or Matthew Sheppard. And this is why I keep fighting.
    Just as a disclaimer... I don't think all Christians are hateful and lack the ability to think on their own.
